How to Improve Your Tennis Serve: Complete Guide

Mastering the Tennis Serve

The serve is the most important shot in tennis. It is the only shot where you have complete control over ball placement, spin, and speed. Here is how to build a reliable, effective serve.

The Continental Grip

The continental grip is essential for serving. Hold the racket as if shaking hands with it. The base knuckle of your index finger should be on the second bevel. This grip allows you to generate spin and power naturally.

The Ball Toss

A consistent toss is the foundation of a good serve. Extend your non-racket arm fully upward and release the ball at the highest point. The ball should reach about one racket length above your full reach. Practice the toss separately until it lands in the same spot every time.

Trophy Position

The trophy position is where your racket is behind your head, elbow bent at roughly 90 degrees, body coiled and ready to explode upward. This position stores the energy that will be released into the ball.
